Tips on matching?

Hey everyone!

I am an incoming M1 this year at a "T50" medical school. I know some people may think this is too early to begin thinking about this, but I figured that if I hope to match a competitive specialty, it couldn't hurt to get some advice. I'm currently quite interested in neurosurgery and was wondering if anyone had any tips on how I can match. With the match rate decreasing by the year, I'm a little nervous about my chances. I know the basics about getting good grades/scores, research, and networking, but anything would definitely be helpful. I would love to hear from M4s who successfully matched NSGY or other competitive specialties. What do you guys do that set you apart and how can I go about doing so in medical school myself?

Thanks!
